Are Zucchinis in Season in April?

Zucchinis are in season during the cooler months, with peak availability from June to September. During the peak season zucchinis are often one of the most affordable vegetables. Zucchinis are available year-round in Australia but the lowest supplies are through the summer months (when most zucchinis are still growing).

When is Zucchini Season in Australia?

Zucchini is a winter vegetable with the majority of our supply available in winter and spring. The peak growing season runs from June to September, but availability continues right throughout the year.

Zucchinis thrive in warm conditions and require full sun exposure. They develop relatively quickly, with most varieties ready for picking within 45-60 days after planting. Commercial growers typically use direct seeding rather than seedlings, and stagger plantings every 2-3 weeks to maintain steady supply throughout the zucchini season.

The Australian zucchini season can be affected by several factors, including powdery mildew in humid conditions and vulnerability to fruit fly infestations, particularly in northern growing regions. Past seasons have been affected by bushfires, when smoke will easily taint flavour and quality of zucchinis.

Where do Zucchinis Come From?

Zucchinis originated in the Americas. In Mexico and northern parts of South America they have been cultivated for over 7,000 years. The original wild zucchinis were smaller and more bitter than modern varieties, which have been selectively bred for milder flavor, tender flesh, and prolific growing.

In Australia zucchinis come mainly from Queensland (around 50% of annual supply) and Victoria (25%) with other significant crops also grown in NSW (20%). It is one of the few crops to be grown commercially in every state and territory. Queensland’s Bundaberg region and the Lockyer Valley have the longest seasons, while Victoria and NSW has a shorter production window concentrated in winter.

Green zucchini varieties like Black Beauty are most common. But yellow zucchinis such as Goldfinger and Aztec Gold are also gaining popularity for their unique marketing appeal on supermarket shelves.
