Spring Vegetables: What Vegetables are in Season in Spring?

Australian spring vegetables arranged in a pattern on a spring green backdrop

Our list of spring vegetables in Australia below shows you what vegetables are in season in September, October and November.

Asparagus

Asparagus is a classic spring vegetable and availability should be high through spring. In a normal year about two thirds of supply is delivered during asparagus season in spring. The rest is imported so if you are looking for the best eating asparagus now is the time to buy.

Broccoli

Broccoli is available almost year round these days but the start of spring is their peak season in Australia. Look out for good deals on broccoli in early spring.

Cabbages

While your classic red and white cabbages are more autumn and winter vegetables, it’s time to enjoy some Asian cabbages. Spring is the peak of the pak choy season and bok choy is also plentiful until summer. Baby choy and choy sum are also tasty in spring, but wombok will be minimal until summer.

Celery

You will have to wait until summer for peak celery season but availability will ramp up throughout spring. It’s a great addition to soups and smoothies when it’s in season and good value.

Cucumbers

Another traditionally summer vegetable (or are they fruit) should see availability increase in mid to late spring. The cucumber season kicks off earlier in SA and NSW so expect plenty of the spring harvest to come from there.

Leeks

Leek season is slowing down but tasty produce should still be available through until summer. Take advantage of those stews before the weather starts warming up.

Lettuce

Lettuce season really kicks off in summer when cos lettuce and oak leaf lettuce are available, but iceberg lettuce season starts a bit earlier and you should see nice fresh produce increasing from mid spring.

Hass Avocados

Yeah I know it’s actually a fruit but it merits inclusion as a spring vegetable just for all the fans who had to endure shepard avocados over the last few months. Hass avocados should be well stocked throughout spring so get out there and enjoy.

Peas

Nothing is more of a spring vegetable than a fresh pea. Most pea varieties are spring vegetables. Fresh garden peas are available from late winter to early summer so take advantage because they just taste so much better than frozen peas. The peak season for sugar snap peas and snow peas will be later in spring.

Zucchini

We are coming to the end of the zucchini season so make sure you jump on any deals in early spring. Availability tends to drop sharply in late spring and you will be waiting until mid autumn to see the best eating zucchinis again.
